A Conversation with Dr. Jeff Myers, of Summit Ministries
In a world filled with conflicting worldviews and societal pressures, parents are faced with the critical challenge of raising children who possess an unshakeable faith and a biblical worldview. As Yvette Hampton and Dr. Jeff Myers, of Summit Ministries, discussed on the Schoolhouse Rocked Podcast, the task of nurturing the hearts and minds of the rising generation is more complex than ever before. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the key insights and strategies for raising a generation of leaders shared by Dr. Myers, drawing inspiration from his wealth of knowledge and experience in working with teens and young adults.
The Current State of Our Culture
Over the past decade, Dr. Myers has observed a shift in the questions that teens and young adults are asking, which have provided profound insights into the fundamental shifts occurring in culture. The evident shift from more surface-level inquiries to a skepticism regarding the existence of absolute truth presents a significant challenge. Dr. Myers addressed this by stating that about half of those who claim to be Christians in the United States believe that they are their own source of truth… Instead of seeking the truth, as Jesus tells us, people today say, we speak our truth.
This discussion resonates with the prevalent struggle faced by many parents and educators in guiding young individuals through a maze of moral relativism and philosophical skepticism.
Impact of Loss of Truth and Rise of Self
Dr. Myers went on to elucidate the repercussions of the abandonment of truth, which has led to the rise of self, as well as a loss of purpose, culminating in elevated levels of anxiety. The statistics he shared, particularly the increase in young adults expressing self-derogatory thoughts, are concerning. Dr. Myers stated, “That all came from this philosophy that you are your own truth.” It becomes evident that the deteriorating comprehension of absolute truth has resulted in detrimental consequences on the youth’s self-perception and mental well-being.
Strategies for Fostering Unshakeable Faith
“I want to start with the kinds of questions that young adults are asking and then walk alongside them to find answers.”
Dr. Jeff Myers
In unveiling strategies for nurturing unshakeable faith in children, Dr. Myers introduced a comprehensive approach. He underscored the four essential components of building unshakeable faith – A, B, C, D, which represent Answers, Biblical Worldview, Counterfeits, and Dialogue, respectively. Expanding on the concept of Answers, he emphasized the importance of addressing the questions young individuals are asking and guiding them on a journey of seeking answers. “I want to start with the kinds of questions that young adults are asking and then walk alongside them to find answers.”
The pursuit of a Biblical Worldview, according to Dr. Myers, is a crucial cornerstone. He stressed, “I want my children and my students to be convinced that a Biblical worldview is actually factually true. And we can know something is true because we can understand what a justified true belief is. We can know, okay, I have a belief. Is it a true belief? Does it match up with reality? And is it justified? I might believe that the moon does what it does because there’s a giant spider in the sky that pushes it around. Well, the moon does what it does. I’m correct about the facts about that. But why is it a justified belief?”

On the subject of counterfeits, Dr. Myers says “I want students to hear that there are counterfeit worldviews out there, and I want to hear about them first from me. I don’t want them to hear about the on TikTok or in their history class. I want them to hear about those from me. So I help to students recognize, look, success in any area of life, you got to understand the patterns of life. Got to understand the patterns. If you want to be good at a new board game, you got to understand the patterns of play. If you want to be good at a business, you got to understand the patterns of play, sports, everything else. Well, ideas also flow in patterns. So I want them to understand, if you start with a biblical pattern, that God exists. He’s made us in his image. We are fallen, but we are redeemed, and that changes the course of history. Other people have a different view of history. The Marxist says, there’s no God, only the material world exists. We’re all equal. But some people have more than others. That’s not fair. They should be forced to give it back.”
“Other people have a different view of history. The Marxist says, there’s no God, only the material world exists. We’re all equal. But some people have more than others. That’s not fair. They should be forced to give it back. Everybody’s got some idea of what humanity was intended for, how we’re broken and how we ought to be fixed. And those counterfeit ideas, they take the flow of creation, fall, redemption. But they’re false because they take a little bit of truth and they combine it with a big lie.”
Cultivating Dialogue and Winning Hearts
“I want to walk with them in the way Jesus walked with his disciples.”
Dr. Jeff Myers
Dr. Myers also underscored the significance of engaging in dialogue with children. He highlighted the importance of fostering an environment where young individuals are encouraged to bring forth their questions and engage in meaningful discussions. Stressing the aspect of winning the hearts of children, the conversation centered around leading by example and walking in the footsteps of Jesus. Dr. Myers emphasized the need to direct their focus towards Christ saying, “I want to walk with them in the way Jesus walked with his disciples. They went everywhere together. That’s something that you can’t replace that of the three years of earthly ministry.”
As homeschooling parents this can be our superpower. By having our kids home with us we can win the battle of time and live out Deuteronomy 6:7 “You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.”
Implementing Strategies as Homeschool Parents
The insights provided by Dr. Myers serve as a practical guide for parent who are teaching at discipling their kids at home. Implementing regular conversations that address the core questions children have, instilling a robust biblical framework, and teaching the discernment of counterfeit worldviews can significantly impact a child’s faith journey. Furthermore, creating an open dialogue where children feel comfortable expressing their doubts and uncertainties is pivotal in laying the foundation of unshakeable faith.
This critical discussion with Dr. Jeff Myers on the Schoolhouse Rocked Podcast provides a roadmap for parents navigating the intricate task of fostering unshakeable faith in children. By addressing the challenges inherent in the current cultural landscape and offering a structured approach to nurturing faith, Dr. Myers’ insights serve as a beacon of hope. Emphasizing the importance of dialogue, empowerment through answers, and the embodiment of a Christ-centered life, parents and educators are equipped to guide the rising generation towards a steadfast and unwavering faith.
Implementing these strategies has the potential to revolutionize the approach to upbringing and education, ensuring that children emerge as leaders grounded in an unshakeable faith, equipped to navigate the complexities of the modern world with unwavering conviction and clarity.
